Boosting Michigan's Workforce

By Ryan Hundt

Since 2014, Michigan’s Going PRO Talent Fund has helped tens of thousands of workers and businesses harmonize to strengthen our state’s economy. Now’s the time for our lawmakers to push this initiative forward still further, by adding $20 million to existing Going PRO resources in FY 2025.

The Case for Increased Funding

Despite its success, the program's funding has not kept pace with demand. In FY23 alone, businesses requested over $108 million in training grants, nearly double the available funds. This shortfall prevents many companies from providing essential training to their employees, hindering both business growth and worker advancement.

Proven Impact

The Going PRO Talent Fund has made remarkable strides:

·      Over 6,000 businesses have benefited.

·      More than 175,000 workers have been trained.

·      Participants have experienced an average 18% increase in post-training wages.

These outcomes not only improve individual lives but also enhance local economies through increased consumer spending and business productivity.

Governor Whitmer's Proposal

Recognizing the program's importance, Governor Whitmer proposed an additional $20 million for the FY 2025 budget. And in the House, $15 million of support has found its way into the fund. However, full legislative approval is still pending. It’s crucial for lawmakers to support this proposal to ensure continued economic growth.

Strategic Investment for Long-Term Gains

Increasing the Going PRO Talent Fund by $20 million would:

·      Enable more businesses to access training funds.

·      Foster higher wages, job satisfaction, and employee retention.

·      Help small and medium-sized enterprises stay competitive.

Aligning with Broader Goals

This investment aligns with state and national objectives of building a skilled workforce to meet modern economic demands. As industries evolve, the need for upskilling and reskilling becomes increasingly critical. Ensuring that workers are equipped with the latest skills helps attract and retain high-quality employers, driving long-term economic prosperity.

The Time to Act is Now

The proposed funding increase is a prudent investment in Michigan's future. It addresses immediate workforce needs while laying the foundation for sustained economic growth. Higher wages, increased productivity, and a resilient economy are the anticipated returns on this investment.

Our state’s policy leaders must act now to infuse the Going PRO Talent Fund with the necessary $20 million. Investing in our workforce is investing in our future.
