Overview

Attendees will have the opportunity to learn more about Cultural Awareness in a general session, and we will have trainers specifically covering Ukrainian culture, LatinX culture, and Arab culture. This training is intended for Michigan Works! Agency and partner staff.

Description

Session 1: Cultural Adaptability: Key Skills for Enhanced Understanding and Collaboration

This session will explore what culture is and the multifaceted dimensions of culture that influence our interactions and experiences. We will focus on what it means to “flex” into diverse cultural experiences, and how gaining the skills to adapt to and connect with others promotes deeper understanding, awareness, and ultimately, the ability to work more effectively with one another.

Objectives:

  • To be able to define culture and describe how it shapes behaviors, values, and communication styles across diverse communities.

  • To identify the mechanisms at play that influence our ability to foster cross-cultural competence and effective interactions in personal, professional, and global contexts.

Session 2: Exploring Ukraine’s Diverse Heritage and Culture

Objectives:

  • To explore several cultural tendencies within Ukrainian culture that may impact interactions and experiences in a US context

  • To identify at least two strategies participants can implement in their work or services.

Session 3: Arab Culture

Objectives:

  • In this workshop, we will explore and gain insight into Arab American history, culture and understanding more about the Arab American community We will also define the Arab World, highlight ethnic and religious diversity within the Arab World/Arab American community, analyze stereotypes and discuss layers of identity.

  • Engage and learn with the Arab American National Museum (AANM) - the first and only museum of its kind in the United States - as we explore the history and culture of the Arab American community. In this session, we will discuss periods of Arab immigration, learn about the geography of the Arab World, and become culturally knowledgeable and aware. Following our session, guests will walk away with a better understanding of Arab American culture, be able to communicate more effectively with Arab American clients/colleagues, be better equipped to avoid uncomfortable situations and gain valuable knowledge about how history, culture and contributions to the United States.

Session 4: LatinX Culture

Objectives:

  • In this 90-minute workshop, participants will explore the Latino/x/Hispanic diaspora and increase their understanding of how to better serve this community.

  • Define common terminology within the Latino/x/Hispanic diaspora.

  • Describe identity differences within the Latino/x/Hispanic diaspora.

  • Discuss the importance of increasing cultural awareness of the Latino/x/Hispanic diaspora to improve service delivery.

Presented By

  • Sessions 1 and 2: Shirin Behrouz Kambin is the Director of the Immigrant and Refugee Resource Collaborative (IRRC) and will be teaching the general awareness and Ukrainian culture sessions. She will be joined by Anna Bekh who works for ACC and will be co-teaching the Ukrainian session.

  • Session 3: Dave Serio is the Curator of Education for the Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services (ACCESS); Arab American National Museum.

  • Session 4: Yesenia Murillo works for MDHHS and is a partner to the Office of Global Michigan.

Cancellations must be submitted in writing up to seven (7) business days prior to the training to receive a full refund. Cancellations received less than seven (7) business days prior to the training will be invoiced, and payments will not be refunded. No shows will be billed. Substitutions are welcomed.
