Honoring Our Veterans Through Workforce Support

By Ryan Hundt

As Veterans Day approaches, it’s a time to reflect on the sacrifices our servicemen and women have made for our country. But honoring veterans goes beyond ceremonies and speeches—it means taking real action to support them as they transition back to civilian life. At Michigan Works!, we are committed to doing exactly that by providing veterans with the tools, training, and support they need to succeed in today’s workforce.

Our veterans have already served us with incredible courage and commitment. Now, it’s our turn to serve them. As Chief Executive Officer of the Michigan Works! Association, I believe that no veteran should face barriers when it comes to building a new career or accessing vital employment services. That’s why Michigan Works! Agencies across the state offer specialized programs tailored to the unique needs of veterans.

Serving Those Who Have Served

In 2023 alone, Michigan Works! helped more than 12,000 veterans gain access to career services and employment opportunities. We know that the skills and experiences veterans bring are invaluable to employers in every industry, whether they’re looking to fill roles in advanced manufacturing, healthcare, technology, or public service. Veterans often arrive with leadership, problem-solving abilities, and a strong work ethic that make them ideal candidates in an evolving economy.

But transitioning to civilian employment can be challenging. That's why Michigan Works! Agencies provide veterans with priority service—ensuring they are seen quickly and offered personalized career counseling, job search assistance, and access to training programs.

Whether it's writing resumes, preparing for interviews, or connecting directly with local employers, our team is dedicated to making sure veterans have every opportunity to succeed.

A Commitment Backed by Data

Here’s a look at the impact of Michigan Works! on veterans:

  • In 2023, Michigan Works! provided direct job placement assistance to over 7,500 veterans.

  • 3,200 veterans were enrolled in customized skills training programs to help them transition into high-demand careers.

  • Over 1,800 veterans participated in workshops and career coaching sessions, honing skills like resume building, interview techniques, and professional networking.

The needs of our workforce are shifting, and Michigan Works! is evolving with them, keeping an eye on growing industries, technological advancements, and specialized training.
