COVID-19 pandemic emphasizes the need for food insecurity awareness during Hunger Action Month

Food insecurity is a lack of access to affordable and nutritious food.

In Michigan, over 1.35 million people are struggling with hunger, and over 318,000 of them are children who go to bed hungry each night. Previously, the United States had reached its peak of food insecurity during the Great Recession at 50 million people. During the 2020 pandemic, a new peak of 54 million has been reached.

The impact is keenly felt by the most vulnerable in our midst. Nationally, approximately 18 children face food insecurity. Black and Latino households have higher rates of food insecurity compared to the national average.

The COVID-19 pandemic has intensified the effects and challenges of food insecurity. An increased number of Michigan residents are struggling with the added stress of being food insecure, and are dependent upon assistance programs and emergency food resources in their communities to meet their daily needs.

Food insecurity impacts the educational outcomes of children, the costs of health care, the development and stability of the workforce, and the rates of crime in our communities.

Each September, in recognition of Hunger Action Month, people across the nation come together to bring awareness to this issue to support those who face hunger. This year, it is especially critical because of the increased number of families who are experiencing food insecurity for the first time. Food banks across the country estimate that 40 percent of their current visitors need assistance as a direct result of the pandemic.

During this current crisis, we can all be advocates for the health and well-being of our neighbors. You can be a part of the solution during Hunger Action Month by volunteering, advocating, fundraising and donating to your local food bank.
