Celebrating the women leaders across the Michigan Works! system who are pulling others up behind them

By Kimberly Way

Women’s History Month is the acknowledgment and celebration of contributions women have made over time, both in the workplace and to our culture. It’s a chance to reflect on women who lead the way for change.

It is also an occasion to bring to light the disparities women still face, including in the workplace. While women still generally lag behind men in pay rates and labor force participation, there is much advancement on the part of women that’s worth celebration.

In Michigan, 16 agencies from across the state provide residents the support, training and services they need to get on the path to employment success.

Of these 16 agencies, 10 are led by women! We’re seizing this opportunity to recognize those who are making a difference in Michigan. The Michigan Works! network is committed to helping women, regardless of their background, overcome the myriad obstacles that can be in the way of their success.

The Michigan Center for Data and Analytics released its Women in the Michigan Workforce 2024 report this month, showing evidence that gains have been made, but women still face disparities compared to men when it comes to workplace success.

According to the report:

  • Women often work in service-related industries and occupations that typically offer below-average earnings.

  • Women are underrepresented in STEM fields, which are typically high-demand, high-wage occupations.

  • Women make up one in every 10 active registered apprentices.

  • Poverty is more likely to impact women than men.

All of these are policy issues that our network is working to address. With individualized solutions, Michigan Works! understands the barriers to work that particularly affect women – such as finding childcare, housing and transportation instability and mental health issues – and offers solutions thorough the Business Resource Network.

We’re especially passionate about registered apprenticeships! No matter who you are, Michigan Works! can help you get ready for your next job, with the support and strategies to excel at it.
