2010 Michigan Works! for People Annual Conference

The 2010 Michigan Works! for People Annual Conference will be held September 19-21 at the Grand Traverse Resort & Spa in Traverse City, Michigan.

As the largest workforce development Conference in Michigan, this event offers dynamic keynote presentations, a wide array of professional development opportunities and plenty of time for networking. Attendees take away timely, relevant and impactful information to directly and positively affect workforce development in Michigan.

Featured Sessions

Opening Session Keynote Speaker

Breon Klopp, Senior Director of Development for Performance, Instruction and Training, LLC (PIT), offers a nontraditional message that will motivate and inform Conference attendees. Klopp will present an outside-of-the-box keynote that offers a backdrop for developing a sustainable continuous improvement program by utilizing motorsports analogies and themes.


PIT will additionally provide a unique interactive learning experience for Conference attendees that will infuse motivation and inspiration through an actual pit stop station. Teams participate in a real-life pit stop scenario, receive a debriefing with their team coach, repeat the exercise and demonstrate improved techniques and times.

Closing Session Keynote Speaker


Inspirational speaker, renowned author and USPTA tennis professional, Roger Crawford lives and shares an unforgettable message of courage. As an award-winning speaker, he equips audiences throughout the world to break through self-imposed limitations and achieve maximum performance.

Sports Illustrated calls Crawford one of the most accomplished physically challenged athletes in the world. Despite four impaired limbs, he was an NCAA Division I college athlete and holds current certification from the United States Tennis Association. During the closing keynote, Crawford will offer an inspirational message based on his view of possibilities and determination to overcome challenges. This powerful presentation will teach the attitudes and actions needed to move forward and equips attendees to conquer change and triumph over trials.

Super Session Speaker


Tim McCormick, ESPN Broadcaster and former NBA and University of Michigan basketball player, offers a positive message on how to manage the stress associated with Michigan’s economic concerns.
McCormick will discuss the ‘bounce-back’ ability, a combination of resilience, focus and extreme confidence. Attendees learn the theory behind the ‘bounce-back’ ability as the single most important factor for managing expectations and turning adversity into success.

McCormick additionally provides insights based on four key factors which can improve outcomes for any organization; Training Camp Effort, Stamina and Endurance, The Optimistic Outlook and the ability to Enjoy the Journey.

As Michigan recovers from economic chaos, it is important to address building businesses and communities that attract and retain young and emerging talent. Peter Moorhouse, Next Generation Consulting, will share valuable insights gained from helping companies and communities develop their workforce capacity. Moorhouse will share best practices and examples of how to engage young talent, provide opportunities to make connections and participate in the fabric of a thriving community. Attendees learn the ‘whys’ and ‘hows’ of attracting the next generation.

Conference Highlights

Cyber Cafe
The Mobile One-Stop Center (MOC-1) will serve as a Cyber Cafe and be available to all attendees during the 2010 Michigan Works! for People Annual Conference.

The Cyber Cafe, sponsored by South Central Michigan Works!, will be located at the Conference Center entrance and will feature a number of desktop computers with an internet connection and printing capabilities. Attendees can check their email, browse the internet, or simply take a break!

Fun Walk
Start your mornings off on the right foot! Join us Monday, September 20 and Tuesday, September 21, at 6:00 a.m. for a walk along the path that surrounds the grounds of the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa. Bottled water is provided and a special prize drawing will be held each morning for walkers. Participants meet at the Conference registration desk.
