Meet Carissa
Carissa visited Michigan Works! seeking support with academics, employment and personal leadership. She was motivated to succeed in high school, apply to college, find reliable transportation, and work. In less than two years, and with help from Michigan Works!, mentors and friends, Carissa was able to achieve her goals.
Michigan Works! provided materials necessary for Carissa to complete higher-level math courses and even acquire college credit while still in high school. Additionally, staff helped her complete financial aid forms and college applications.
Carissa also worked as a tutor, teaching youth who had difficulty in mathematics. Her skills in geometry made her an excellent tutor, which helped to ensure the success of other students.
Carissa graduated as the valedictorian of the Johannesburg-Lewiston High School class of 2011. She was accepted and will attend Northern Michigan University in the fall.
“Michigan Works! has made it so much easier for me to get to where I want to be,” said Carissa.
Carissa found success through Northeast Michigan Consortium
